What is link checking ?

The process of link checking is where a website owner systematically makes sure all the links in a website are working properly.

The links in a site can be incorrect for several reasons:

- A mistake was made when the site was created or altered; for example perhaps a page has been renamed & all the links to it haven't been updated. This is why it's important to do link checking every time a site is updated.

- The links in a site can "degrade" over time. This occurs because the site has links to external sites which may have disappeared, removed pages or renamed their pages.

When a link isn't working properly and a user clicks the link they might see one of several errors:

- A 404 error; this is usually because the link is pointing to a page which has been removed or renamed.

- An error due to the server hosting the linked page not being found. This usually happens when a website ceases to exist or the server it's based on is temporarily disconnected from the Internet.

These errors can be very frustrating to website users, it can cause them to loose faith in a website and ultimately leave. This is why link checking is so important for all website owners.
