CHECKING FOR BROKEN LINKS
Checking for 404's and other types of broken links is essential for every web site. There are several other tools available which can do this; for example the free link checker provided by the w3c. DeepTrawl differs because like all the errors it finds, broken links are presented in DeepTrawl's ease to use presentation style, just like the results from a web search engine. You can even examine the broken link by having it highlighted in your browser or in the built in html editor, ready to be fixed.
CHECKING YOUR MARKUP IS VALID
Again, the w3c have a free service which can check individual pages have valid markup. With one click DeepTrawl can check every page in your site is composed of valid xhtml (the most stringent check available).
CHECKING FOR INCORRECT SPELLING
It's possible to check the spelling of every page of your site (including the content from back end scripts / databases) by copying and pasting the content into a word processor. This is a very good solution for small sites. In fact back when DeepTrawl.com had only a few pages this is how we used to ensure all content was spelled correctly. When the site started growing we experienced first hand what our users had been telling us; a spell checker would be a great addition to DeepTrawl.
Our website checker is now able to spell check entire websites with one click which takes the worry out of using server side scripts and adding new content. As a bonus our website checker can check an entire site strictly in either US, UK or Canadian English so that sites aren't filled with an unprofessional mixture of international spellings.
OTHER CHECKS
At time of writing DeepTrawl performs 22 separate checks like those above. Everything from checking for credit card numbers, profane or sexual language in user posting to checking for pages which haven't been updated recently.
It's also possible to add your own "check types". This allows you to search for any piece of text or html in every page of your site so out of date html and information can be found & removed quickly. Even something like checking every page has a copyright message and all of them contain the correct date is easy with DeepTrawl.
