Why not just check website spelling in your editor?

This is a very good question. Dealing with website spelling seems like a fairly trivial matter at first. Why not simply let Dreamweaver, FrontPage or some other editor deal with it? There are several reasons why this is problematic. A few of these are listed below:

- Your tools may not be consistently set to the "right" kind of English. For example what if one person editing pages on your site is using website spelling in UK English and another is using US English? This might appear unprofessional or confusing to your readers.

- Scripts; much of your site content many not actually come from your editor, it could be generated by a server side script which writes html. If this is the case the problem becomes checking all of the spelling used in the script, which isn't so easy.

- Databases; again, your content could be coming from a database instead of regular html pages. The information in the database might be generated by a machine or by humans with some unknown checking process (perhaps it's part of some forum software).

These issues mean the best approach is usually to check the spelling of each page of your site, just as it appears on your screen. The most obvious way to do this is to copy all of the text out of every page and into a word processor to see the mistakes. This approach can be effective for smaller sites but still leads to two problems:

- Scalability; if your site has 10 pages this won't take you too long but when it grows to 10,000 pages this obviously becomes unmanageable.

- Hidden text; Pasting text from your web pages into a word processor will almost certainly miss some important areas of the page such as the title, description & the alt texts for your images.
