As well as finding problems with web sites which are live on the web, DeepTrawl allows you to check sites stored on local or network hard drives. The is advantageous because it allows you to make sure your site is free from problems before you expose it to the world.
The easiest way to start trawling one or more web pages stored on your local hard drive, is to use the File button, located to the right of the URL box.

Above: The File button
Clicking this button will launch a dialog, which will allow you to open an html file. This will then be inserted into the URL box ready for you to start trawling.
Remember to select the first page of your web site, usually called something like index.htm.
|
After you have finished with the file dialog, the URL bar will show the URL of your local file. You can now press the start button (shown to the right) to start trawling your web site. |
|
For future reference, it is not necessary to use the File button to enter the location of your start page. You can enter the local start page using the format shown below:
file://myDir/myFile.htm
Note: DeepTrawl may still need to be connected to the Internet when trawling local files if your local pages contain links to pages found on the web.
