Help > Adding Trawl Types

DeepTrawl allows you to add your own trawl types, meaning you can search for unique html problems on all your pages.

Adding your own trawl type works very much like using a web search engine, except the search terms are found in any part of your HTML, not just the text which users see. Any page where the search terms are found will show up as a potential problem.

User created trawl types allow you to search for common mistakes or problems which may be unique to your site. For example you could enter an out of date phone number or the name of a deleted product line to find all mentions of these on your website.

Going further you could even search for HTML style elements you wish to change. For example if you want to change the color scheme of your website you could enter the old color as a search term.

In order to add a new trawl type, first select the Add a new trawl type option from the Trawl drop down menu.

Toggling the on/off selections will turn this trawl type on and off by default in the different trawl levels.

Screen shot item number 5

The Case Sensitive option. When turned on, only HTML which matches the case of the search terms you enter will be found.

Screen shot item number 6

This is where the search terms to be found should be entered. The search terms should be entered as if you were using a web search engine, i.e. using character combinations, NOT and OR etc. More information on the search terms can be found on the next page.

Once you are finished entering information into this dialog, your trawl type will appear at the bottom of the Trawl for... tab.

When a trawl is performed with your new trawl type turned on, any page which matches your search query will show a potential problem, indicated as being found by this trawl type.
